When do you want to find this out?

View Comments

The tag reads “out of service – will not pump or hold pressure”. When do you want to find this out? Certainly not at the fire door, unfortunately this is where many critical equipment malfunctions are discovered.

All equipment should be tested and operated regularly to insure it will work as expected!

Further, remember that your “go to” tool may not always come through. Many firefighters rely on the hydra ram as their primary forcible entry tool. When it’s applicable, and when it works, it’s a great tool. For all other times you better be proficient in your firefighting basics – with your IRONS in this case.

Have your head in the game, be “Combat Ready” every day.

Great point. All the newer equipment makes our jobs easier, safer and more effective, but you can’t just ‘oil the ole hickory axe handle’ anymore. Every time I have the guys drill on some set or piece of equipment that has more than one part, we find something stuck, sticking, leaking, misaligned, missing… even though we try to keep up with everything!

PS It’s usually the release lever that is not adjusted properly on the Hydra Rams that cause that problem.
